Baptism
Baptism, or Christening as it is sometimes called, is the way in which we join the Christian Church, and celebrate what God promises for each individual. As such it is a very significant event in the life of anyone, whether a baby, a child or an adult.
At the Baptism Service promises and declarations are made by those being baptised, or by their Parents and Godparents on their behalf. See side panel.

The Parish of West Byfleet welcomes anyone living in the Parish who presents themselves or their children for Baptism.

For young people and adults the normal practice is to attend a series of confirmation classes prior to Baptism. These courses are usually run on an annual basis.

Where babies or children are presented for Baptism, the parents will be visited and will normally be asked to attend a Baptism preparation meeting. Godparents must be baptised persons, and preferably of communicant standing as well.

The Baptism will take place as part of the main Sunday worship at 10.00am in St. John's Church. At this service the congregation on behalf of the Parish and the whole church promises to welcome and nurture those being baptised. West Byfleet Parish take this promise seriously, and will be keen to ensure that support in spiritual matters is always available.

And best of all the Church claims for those who are baptised that:

"God has touched you with his love and given a place among his people. God promises to be with you in joy and sorrow, to be your guide in life, and to bring you safely to heaven."

There are no fees payable for Baptism.

If you wish to enquire further about Baptism please contact, in the first instance, the Vicar (01932 345270). Email the Vicar

The St Johns premises are available for bookings for Christening Parties.

Baptism Promises

The promises and declarations made by those being baptised, or by their Parents and Godparents on their behalf include:

Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?

Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?

Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?

Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?

Do you submit to Christ as Lord?

Do you come to Christ the way, the truth and the life?

The congregation on behalf of the Parish and the whole church makes this promise:

"Faith is the gift of God to his people. In baptism the Lord is adding to our number those whom he is calling. People of God, will you welcome these children and uphold them in their new life in Christ? With the help of God we will."
